A collection of six original Japanese editions of classical Noh theatre plays from the Kanze school, published between 1970 and 1974 during the Showa period.
The books belong to the Kanze-ryu Sanko Utaibon reference edition, associated with the editorial work of Maruoka Akira (1907-1968), a Japanese writer and scholar of Noh theatre. They were published by Nohgaku Shorin, a specialist Tokyo publisher with a long history of producing Noh theatre texts.
The editorial tradition of this series dates back to the early Showa period. These six volumes are later editions published after Maruoka Akira's death.
The collection includes six classical Noh plays, representing literary, historical, and legendary subjects. Among them are Nonomiya and Yugao, both associated with The Tale of Genji, one of the central works of classical Japanese literature.
Contents:
Nonomiya - 1970
Yugao - 1970
Yoshino Tennin - 1972
Kosode Soga - 1973
Yorimasa - 1973
Kakitsubata - 1974
All six books are individual editions of different plays, printed on paper and bound in traditional Japanese thread bindings. The dark blue covers feature a geometric pattern and stylized birds. The books also contain printed forms for recording Noh lessons and performances.
