Kamakura Great Buddha After 1923 Earthquake Restoration - Prewar Japanese Photograph

$134.65

Shipping to United States: $13.93

Historical Japanese photograph of the Great Buddha of Kamakura, dating to the prewar Shōwa period, probably the late 1920s–1930s.

The photograph depicts the monumental bronze statue of Amida Buddha at Kōtoku-in Temple in Kamakura, one of the masterpieces of Japanese Buddhist sculpture from the 13th century.

During the Great Kantō Earthquake of September 1923, the statue was displaced and its pedestal seriously damaged. Restoration work was completed in 1925. This photograph presents a side view of the Great Buddha in its post-restoration setting, with the historic temple surroundings visible.

From a private Japanese collection of historical photographs documenting major works of Japanese art and cultural heritage.

The reverse preserves a handwritten Japanese catalog record identifying the sculpture, its Kamakura-period origin, its location at Kōtoku-in Temple, and the restoration following the 1923 earthquake.

Size (approx.): 10 × 15 cm.

Condition: Vintage condition, with age-related wear and some spotting on the reverse.
