This well-known Zen expression originates from the teachings of the Chinese master Zhaozhou (778–897). In Japanese tea culture, it came to signify a simple invitation to enjoy a cup of tea.
The work comes from the Daitoku-ji Collection, Kyoto, a historic center of Japanese Zen Buddhism and tea culture.
