Daruma and Hime Daruma – Japanese Tanzaku Painting with Hanging Scroll, Signed Shiko, Showa Period

Original Japanese ink and color artwork on a traditional tanzaku, dating to the Showa period, approximately 1930s–1970s. Signed Shiko and accompanied by a decorative hanging scroll from the Showa period.

The composition depicts Daruma and Hime Daruma, two traditional Japanese figures associated with good fortune, resilience, and perseverance. The playful expression of Daruma contrasts with the delicate floral decoration of Hime Daruma. The calligraphy above them reads Okiagari, referring to the ability to rise again after falling.

The tanzaku is presented in an elegant hanging scroll with richly patterned gold and brown brocade. The scroll is designed to hold interchangeable tanzaku of the same format, allowing different artworks to be displayed.

Condition: Good vintage condition. The tanzaku shows age-related spotting and minor discoloration, more noticeable on the reverse. The hanging scroll shows signs of age and use consistent with its period.
