“Echizen, Tōjinbō”

Original Edo-period Japanese color woodblock print (nishiki-e) by Utagawa Hiroshige II (1826–1869), from the series Sixty-Eight Views of the Various Provinces (Shokoku rokujū-hakkei), published in 1862 (Bunkyū 2) by Tsutaya Kichizō (Kōeidō).

No. 30 from the series, depicting the dramatic rocky coastline of Tōjinbō in Echizen Province. The upper cartouche identifies the series and location, and the print is signed Hiroshige ga.

The series was produced in vertical chūban format. An impression of this exact design is held by the Fukui Fine Arts Museum, while a complete 1862 album of the series is preserved in the National Diet Library of Japan, providing firm reference points for the title, number, date, and attribution.

The impression is of good quality, with a clear printed line and well-preserved color. The blue bokashi gradation in the upper sky remains visible, together with the contrasting green, yellow, and brown color blocks of the rocky coastline.

Condition

Good antique condition. Clear impression with well-preserved color. The sheet has been trimmed along the lower edge; the principal composition, signature, cartouches, and marginal marks remain intact. There are small localized old losses to the paper along the upper edge, not affecting the principal image. Minor age-related wear and marks are present. Please examine the photographs carefully for condition.
