Hosoai Katsudō Daruma Shikishi, Every Day Is a Good Day, Daitoku-ji Zen Painting, Late Showa

Original Japanese Zen ink painting on shikishi by Hosoai Katsudō (d. 2005), a Rinzai Zen monk and former abbot of Ryōgen-in, one of the subtemples of the Daitoku-ji temple complex in Kyoto.

The work depicts Daruma (Bodhidharma). The calligraphic inscription reads Nichinichi kore kōjitsu, meaning "Every Day Is a Good Day", a well-known Zen phrase closely associated with Japanese tea culture.

The painting and calligraphy are executed directly in ink on shikishi. The work is hand-signed and bears three red artist seals.

Hosoai Katsudō was directly connected with Daitoku-ji through Ryōgen-in. His calligraphy and ink paintings belong to the tradition of Zen art closely associated with the tea culture of Daitoku-ji.
