Ogawa Ken’ichi Hōjitsu - Bird and Autumn Maple - vintage Japanese painting on shikishi

Vintage Japanese painting on shikishi by Ogawa Ken’ichi, art name Hōjitsu (born 1947), depicting a bird among autumn maple branches.

Original ink and color painting dating from the second half of the Shōwa period, probably the 1970s–1980s.

Signed Hōjitsu with the artist’s red seal on the front. The reverse bears a handwritten attribution reading “work by Ogawa Ken’ichi” and an old pencil notation of the surname Ogawa. The signature and seal correspond with documented works by the artist.

Ogawa Ken’ichi was born in Kyoto in 1947 and studied art at the fine arts course of Kyoto Municipal Hiyoshigaoka High School. At the age of twenty he travelled to Argentina and spent approximately sixteen years in South America while continuing his artistic practice. After returning to Japan, he held numerous solo exhibitions in galleries and department stores. His documented work includes watercolor, oil painting, sumi ink and nihonga. Hōjitsu is his documented art name.
