Shigeo Ishikawa - Winter Village - Vintage Japanese Painting on Shikishi, 1960s

Original Japanese painting on shikishi, dating to the 1960s.

A winter rural landscape by Shigeo Ishikawa (1938–2010), a Japanese yōga painter known for landscapes of traditional villages and minka farmhouses. Ishikawa exhibited with the Daiichi Bijutsu Kyōkai from the late 1950s, worked in Europe in 1964–1965, and held his first solo exhibition in 1966. In 1977, NHK presented him as a “painter of minka”.

This early work is executed in a loose, transparent manner, with restrained color and broad washes, differing from the denser treatment of many of Ishikawa’s mature oil paintings.

Signed “S. Ishikawa”, identified as Shigeo Ishikawa (1938–2010).
