Yoshioka Kadō (1874–1917) — Bijin-ga on Silk Shikishi, Late Meiji–Early Taishō

A female portrait in the bijin-ga tradition, painted on silk in the tradition of Japanese nihonga. Signed Kadō with the artist’s red seal at the right.

Yoshioka Kadō was born in Kyoto in 1874. He studied painting under Kishi Chikudō and, after moving to Tokyo in 1902, continued his training under Terasaki Kōgyō. His name is recorded in Japanese professional art directories of the early 20th century. Kadō belonged to the generation of nihonga painters working at the transition from the Meiji to the Taishō period. He died in 1917.

Late Meiji – early Taishō, approximately 1900–1917.

Condition:
Antique condition with pronounced traces of age and storage. Noticeable surface wear and losses along the edges and corners of the shikishi, with several small localized losses within the image, mainly in the dark areas of the coiffure. The main painted field, including the face, kimono and fan, is significantly better preserved than the margins.
