Japanese sumi-e ink painting on a traditional shikishi board, dating to the late Showa period, second half of the 20th century.
The calligraphy reads Mushin — “No-Mind”, an important concept in Zen Buddhism referring to a state of mind free from attachment to thoughts, desires, and deliberate control.
The small monkey carries an additional Buddhist meaning. The monkey is traditionally associated with the restless, wandering mind — the “monkey mind,” constantly moving from one thought or desire to another. Together with Mushin, the motif refers to quieting this mental activity and releasing attachment to thought.
Hand-painted in sumi ink. Signature and red artist seal are present.
