New York – Toshio Suga – 1960s Vintage Japanese Painting on Shikishi

“New York”

Original Japanese painting by Toshio Suga, dating to the 1960s and associated with the artist’s New York period. The work combines fluid linear drawing with transparent areas of color, characteristic of Suga’s urban works from this period.

Executed in ink and color on traditional Japanese shikishi board. Signed “T. Suga” in Latin script, with the artist’s red seal and the inscription “NEW YORK”.

Toshio Suga (1910–1992) was a Japanese modernist painter whose career developed from prewar figurative painting to geometric abstraction. Active in New York in the early 1960s, he became closely involved with the international avant-garde and in 1964 initiated the New Geometric Art Group, an important Japanese movement connected with geometric abstraction and Op Art. His work is represented in the Worcester Art Museum, and his New York activity is also documented through the Museum of Modern Art’s Art Lending Service in 1963. The present shikishi belongs to this particularly significant New York period of his career.
