Antique Japanese painting in ink and color on shikishi. Late Meiji to Taisho and early Showa periods, circa 1890-1930.
The image echoes Hokusai’s “Fisherman in the Snow.” The calligraphic freedom of the brush is combined with an atmospheric manner close to Impressionism: winter light and distant forms are conveyed through soft tonal washes. This combination appears in modernized Japanese painting from the late 19th to the first third of the 20th century.
Signed and marked with two red artist seals.
