Description

“Picture of a Nude Beauty” is an early 20th-century Japanese hanging scroll from the late Meiji to Taisho period, circa 1900–1926.

The colour image on silk reproduces a composition by the Edo-period ukiyo-e artist Katsukawa Shuncho, active circa 1783–1795. The signature Shuncho ga is reproduced as part of the composition.

The image is presented in a traditional Japanese hanging-scroll format with textile and paper mounting. The lower roller has lacquered wooden end fittings.

Museum reference

A corresponding composition in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is attributed to Katsukawa Shuncho and catalogued under the title Woman with Revolving Lantern, and Woman and Baby in Bathtub. The museum record refers to the Edo-period source composition; this hanging scroll is an early 20th-century version on silk.

Condition

Good condition for an antique hanging scroll of the early 20th century. Natural traces of age and storage, including creases, rubbing, small stains and wear to the paper and textile mounting. Local edge damage and surface irregularities are visible on the blue reverse mounting. The lacquered end fittings show traces of use.
