Antique Japanese Silk Hanging Scroll – Nude Beauty after Katsukawa Shuncho, Meiji–Taisho Period, #931

Picture of a Nude Beauty

Antique Japanese hanging scroll featuring a composition after Katsukawa Shuncho (active circa 1783–1795), one of the distinguished artists of the Edo-period ukiyo-e tradition. Executed on silk and traditionally mounted as a Japanese hanging scroll, the work dates approximately to the late Meiji–Taisho period (circa 1900–1926).

The composition portrays an intimate domestic scene with a woman bathing a young child in a wooden tub and another woman holding a revolving lantern. Delicate outlines, subtle colours and intricate textile patterns reflect the refined aesthetics of Edo-period bijin-ga. The composition includes the signature Shuncho ga and is associated with a historical design represented in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

The scroll combines the elegance of classical Japanese figure imagery with traditional silk and textile mounting, making it a distinctive example of early twentieth-century Japanese decorative art.
