Nishigaki Fukou - “Wa: Tottori Okiagari Koboshi” - vintage Japanese painting on shikishi

Vintage Japanese painting on shikishi by Nishigaki Fukou, depicting Tottori okiagari koboshi, traditional Japanese self-righting folk dolls.

The reverse inscription dates the work to early spring 2000, gives the title “Wa” / “Harmony”, and names Nishigaki Fukou with Sogakai noted in parentheses. The front inscription identifies the subject as Tottori okiagari koboshi and bears the artist’s Fukou signature and red artist seal.

Nishigaki Fukou, 1917-2005, was a Japanese nihonga painter from Iwami, Tottori. He studied under Kobayakawa Shusei and was connected with the Sozo Bijutsu, Shinseisaku, and Sogakai line of modern Japanese painting. His work often drew on the landscapes, folklore, and regional culture of Tottori and Inaba.

Fukou served as a judge for city and prefectural exhibitions in Tottori, received the Tottori Prefecture Cultural Merit Award for Japanese painting in 2004, and his works are recorded in the collection and exhibition materials of the Tottori Prefectural Museum of Art.

The subject of Tottori okiagari koboshi belongs to the local folk culture of Fukou’s native region. This late, compact work connects traditional toy imagery with the artist’s long-standing interest in Tottori, regional memory, and folk subjects.
