Motofuji Yoshiharu - Awa Odori - vintage Japanese painting on shikishi

Vintage Japanese painting on shikishi by Motofuji Yoshiharu, depicting a group of Awa Odori dancers.

The lower right bears the signature Yoshiharu, the artist’s red seal, and the date 1987. The original wrapper is inscribed by hand with the title Awa Odori and the artist’s name.

The work is accompanied by a postcard from Motofuji Yoshiharu’s solo exhibition, held at Gallery Platane in Matsuyama from October 1 to 15, 1987. The date on the painting corresponds with the year of the exhibition. The postcard reproduces another composition by the artist on the same subject and includes a biographical note.

Motofuji Yoshiharu, born in 1926 in Iyo, was a Japanese yōga painter associated with the artistic community of Ehime Prefecture. He studied under Professor Fujitani of Ehime University, exhibited at the Ehime Prefectural Art Exhibition and with Sogen-kai, and received four awards at the prefectural exhibition.

He was accepted for six consecutive Nitten exhibitions, each time with a work devoted to Awa Odori. In 1974, Motofuji Yoshiharu participated in the establishment of the Iyo City Art Association and later served as its president. He continued exhibiting and teaching into the 2000s, with documented exhibition activity as late as 2010. His standing within the regional art community is reflected in the memorial prize established in his name in the Western painting section of the Ehime Prefectural Art Exhibition.
