A color drawing on shikishi by Japanese artist Katsuji Miura (1917–2016).
The work depicts a young woman in traditional Afghan dress beside a bowl of pomegranates. The artist’s title translates as Girl with Pomegranates, while the original paper wrapper identifies the setting as Afghanistan.
The title is inscribed directly on the work, accompanied by the signature K. MIURA and the artist’s red seal. The paper wrapper repeats the title and bears the full name of Katsuji Miura.
Katsuji Miura was a Japanese yōga painter, illustrator, and travel artist. The Silk Road, Central Asia, urban landscapes, and people in traditional dress occupied a central place in his work.
A solo exhibition devoted to his Silk Road works was held in Tokyo in 1970, followed in 1990 by a retrospective exhibition of drawings from the series. From 1973 to 1985, Miura headed the Japanese artists’ association Genten. In 2011, a museum dedicated to his work opened in his native city of Seki.
Girl with Pomegranates belongs to one of the principal themes of Miura’s art: the countries and peoples of the historic Silk Road.
