Kinbara Teruya – Hokiji Pagoda – Vintage Japanese Painting on Shikishi

Original Japanese landscape on shikishi by Kinbara Teruya (1933–2018). The work depicts the pagoda of Hokiji Temple rising above trees and a rural landscape.

The work was created with color and drawing media on shikishi board. The title is written in the lower right corner, together with the artist’s Latin signature and red seal.

The reverse is inscribed with the title, the artist’s full name, his affiliation with the Niki-kai art association, and his residence in Gamagori City.

The shikishi is preserved with its original paper wrapper. The wrapper repeats the title, the artist’s name, his Niki-kai affiliation, and the reference to Gamagori. It also bears the same red seal as the work.

Kinbara Teruya was a Japanese yōga painter associated with Aichi Prefecture. His work was first accepted for the Niki Exhibition in 1959. He later became a committee member of the association and served as head of its Chubu regional branch.

Kinbara received the Miyamoto Prize in 1992 and the Kuroda Prize in 2001. Alongside his large exhibition paintings, he created landscapes devoted to particular places in Japan. In 2021, the Seto City Art Museum held a retrospective exhibition of his work.
