Vintage Japanese painting on a traditional shikishi board depicting a monkey.
The work was created by Hiroshi Kato (1927–2024), an artist and art teacher associated with Nagoya and Anjo. He participated in exhibitions organized by Kofukai, Nitten, and Dokuritsuten, presented his work in international exhibition projects, and received several regional cultural awards.
Kato also completed public and temple commissions, including murals, folding screens, ceiling paintings, and paintings for temple interiors.
Shikishi formed a distinct part of his artistic practice. In 1995, a catalogue documenting a collection of one hundred shikishi works by Hiroshi Kato was published.
The work bears the artist’s seal. The original cover and a biographical insert listing the artist’s exhibitions, awards, and completed projects have been preserved.
