Edo period, 1858.
Author: Akatsuki Kanenari.
Illustrator: Matsukawa Hanzan.
Calligrapher: Onohara Keizo.
Incomplete set: 4 volumes out of 5.
This late Edo illustrated edition is connected with Shoshinge, one of the central texts of the Jodo Shinshu tradition. The literary and explanatory side of the book is associated with Akatsuki Kanenari. The illustrations by Matsukawa Hanzan are built into the structure of the book and function not as an attachment, but as part of the reading and understanding of the text. The calligraphic transcription was executed by Onohara Keizo.
In content, the book is tied to the reading and explanation of Shoshinge, a text deeply rooted in the Jodo Shinshu tradition and in the practice of daily recitation. In book form, this edition brings together religious commentary, reading practice, and the culture of the Japanese illustrated woodblock book of the mid-19th century.
