Original Japanese woodblock-printed book set on washi paper, Edo period, 1833 (Tenpo 4). Complete in 9 volumes.
Hyakunin Isshu Hitoyogatari is the representative work of late Edo scholar Ozaki Masayoshi (1755–1827), published posthumously in Osaka in 1833 by Tsurugaya Kyubei, with illustrations by Oishi Matora (1792–1833). The work combines the poems of the Hyakunin Isshu tradition with accounts of the poets, historical and literary commentary, and numerous woodblock illustrations.
This complete 1833 edition is particularly relevant today: Hyakunin Isshu Hitoyogatari was selected by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan, as the classical literature source text for the 11th JLPP International Translation Competition in 2026.
