Late Edo / early Meiji Japanese woodblock print by Kawanabe Kyosai, presenting two established motifs from the “Hyakuzu” series. The work is printed as a double page, combining two independent scenes executed in Kyosai’s characteristic satirical manner.
The left scene corresponds to “Foreign Children at Play”, a known motif showing a group of children in animated, humorous movement. The right scene presents “Water Play”, an energetic depiction of children interacting with flowing water, typical of Kyosai’s expressive child-themed imagery within “Hyakuzu”.
The print is executed in multi-color woodblock technique with tonal qualities consistent with late Edo to early Meiji impressions. The surface shows natural signs of age appropriate for the period.
Style note
Multi-color late Edo / early Meiji woodblock printing in Kyosai’s satirical figurative style.
