Vintage Taishō–early Shōwa Japanese ink shikishi set – Tanuki scenes

Set of two vintage Japanese shikishi painted in ink with light colour accents, created in the transitional Taishō–early Shōwa period. Both works depict tanuki in a soft, playful manner characteristic of this era: expressive brushwork, gentle tonal transitions and an open composition with a clear sense of movement.

The first board shows a tanuki balancing on a line while holding an umbrella. The second presents two tanuki lifting their paws toward a distant light or moon. The pair is executed by the same hand and forms a natural narrative set, reflecting the light humour and animal-scene aesthetics typical of Taisei-era ink painting.

Each board is an authentic vintage shikishi on a firm traditional base, with naturally aged surface and preserved fibre structure.
