“Quince and small chrysanthemums.”
Original Japanese shikishi painted by Kawai Seiji (born 1927), showing a large quince fruit with a small branch of chrysanthemums. The work belongs to the late Shōwa period and reflects the artist’s characteristic approach, combining ink linework with soft color washes and carefully placed pigment accents.
Kawai Seiji, born in Nagoya, exhibited in several Japanese and international art shows and was associated with the New Painting Association. His style blends traditional ink techniques with postwar nihonga sensibilities. The signature and seal on this shikishi correspond to known examples of his work. A printed biographical card is included.
The composition is executed in a calm, postwar nihonga manner, with gentle transitions of color and a balanced layout. The handwritten inscription is in a semi-cursive style, accompanied by the artist’s personal seal.
Traditional format: shikishi on a hard backing with a gold border.
