Fan-shaped scene of Heian-style courtly life by Yanagi Riun (Unrin)
Fan-shaped scene of Heian-style courtly life, painted by Yanagi Riun (art-name Unrin). Depicting a noble family and a child in a peaceful domestic moment, this refined work embodies the Kyoto Yamato-e revival of the early Shōwa period (ca. 1920–1935). Executed with mineral pigments on washi paper, it shows the artist’s delicate sense of balance and detail. Under close light, the initial child sketch (shitagaki) is faintly visible beneath the kimono layer — a rare and poetic trace of the creative process.
Executed in the Kyoto Yamato-e revival style with soft lines, decorative textile patterns, and emotional stillness characteristic of classical Japanese aesthetics.
