Original Japanese woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892), titled “Jigoku Dayu” – the Courtesan of Hell.
The woman gazes into a mirror where her reflection appears as a skeleton, while demons attend behind her — a powerful allegory of vanity, death, and enlightenment.
Late Meiji edition, ca. 1885–1890. Signed and sealed Yoshitoshi hitsu (芳年筆) with his red artist seal.
Printed on handmade washi paper, vibrant colors, good condition for age.
A striking example of Yoshitoshi’s moral-fantastic imagination and his fascination with Buddhist themes of the afterlife.
