Vintage Japanese silk shikishi with an ink-and-color depiction of a standing samurai figure, created in the Taishō–early Shōwa period (1920–1940s). The work is made on traditional shikishi board with mica inclusions, using a decorative nihonga technique typical of early 20th-century studio production.
The figure is shown in formal armor, holding a spear and wearing a pair of swords at the waist. The calm, frontal pose and the stylized detailing of the armor reflect the historical-genre aesthetics popular in Japan during the transition from late Meiji to early Shōwa. The composition relies on a neutral background and clear contour work, characteristic of decorative figure painting of this period.
Style note
Nihonga decorative figure painting, early 20th-century studio style.
