Japanese ink shikishi created in the early Shōwa period, with a possible transition from the late Taishō era. The work depicts barley rendered in a soft sumi-e technique, using transparent washes and a restrained botanical form. A short poetic formula appears on the right, while the signature and seal on the left follow the stylistic features of the Taishō–Shōwa transition. The format corresponds to a traditional shikishi board.
Meaning Note
The vertical inscription reflects an idea of natural stages and gradual change. The use of “three” suggests a sequence of transitions in nature — growth, shift, and maturation — which resonates with the quiet depiction of barley.
Style note
Refined botanical sumi-e focused on translucency and calm linear rhythm.
Condition
Good vintage condition. Vintage works may show natural signs of age (light toning, small fiber creases, gentle edge wear), so please review the photos carefully.
