Vintage Showa Shikishi – Samurai Kabuto Watercolor, Signed & Sealed, 1950s–70s Japan

A genuine mid-20th century shikishi (traditional Japanese art board), hand-painted in watercolor and ink with a finely stylized depiction of a samurai kabuto helmet. This work dates to the Showa era, circa 1950–1970s, and bears the artist’s brush signature (gō – art-name) and red seal, both well-preserved and clearly legible.

The kabuto, with its bold golden maedate and decorative elements, is a powerful symbol of courage, honor, and protection in Japanese culture. It is closely associated with the Tango-no Sekku (Boys’ Day Festival), a celebration wishing strength and success for boys, and a popular theme in traditional Japanese art.

Executed on heavyweight art board without border, the piece shows natural age patina and light foxing, consistent with authentic vintage works. Its subject, age, and signed authenticity make it a rare and highly collectible item for enthusiasts of Japanese military motifs, Showa-era art, and symbolic interior decoration.
