A serene mid-20th century Japanese shikishi painting by artist Ishikawa Tōmitsu, a member of the respected art society Ichiyō-kai, known for its avant-garde yet deeply traditional approach to postwar Japanese art.
The composition captures rugged coastal rocks and distant boats amidst a shimmering sea, painted in a delicate palette of deep indigo and soft gray-blue washes. The work combines traditional Japanese suiboku techniques with the modern sensibility of the Ichiyō-kai movement, founded in 1955 by progressive artists breaking away from the Nika Association.
The painting is executed on a classic shikishi board (approx. 24 × 27 cm), with a gilt edge and visible aged patina, giving it a warm and authentic vintage character. On the reverse, it bears the artist’s signature Ishikawa Tōmitsu and the Ichiyō-kai inscription, along with the artist’s personal red seal on the front.
An excellent piece for collectors of Japanese watercolors, suiboku-inspired art, and mid-century Japanese painting.
