A fine antique Japanese shikishi board (色紙) with its original gold border, painted in expressive sumi ink and mineral pigments.
The composition shows broad leaves and a delicate dragonfly (蜻蛉 – tombo) perched on a stem – a seasonal motif beloved in Japanese art.
In Japanese tradition, the dragonfly is called kachimushi (勝虫) – “the insect of victory,” a symbol of courage, resolve, and good fortune, often featured in samurai culture and classical poetry.
The inscription reads “Meiwa 1763” (明和乙亥) and the signature “Yama” (山).
Although the date references the Edo period, the materials (gold-bordered factory-made board, bright synthetic vermilion) place this work in the Taishō (1912–1926) to early Shōwa (c.1926–1935) period – about 100 years old.
✨ A meaningful piece for collectors of Japanese art, symbolizing luck and determination. Perfect for framing or display.
Ships securely from Latvia (Riga Gallery of Japanese Art “CloudyYokomido”) with protective packaging.
