A Taishō–early Shōwa shikishi depicting a female Daruma figure (onna-Daruma) in a rounded form, accompanied by a smaller top view of the same folk toy. The face is rendered with soft, distinctly feminine features and a decorative head covering, reflecting the uncommon early-20th-century variations of Daruma in a female form. A brush placed below completes the composition as a quiet studio study connected with everyday artistic tools.
The work is executed in ink and color with light linear detailing. The surface shows natural signs of age consistent with the period.
Meaning note
Female Daruma figures are significantly rarer than the traditional male-based form. In the Taishō–early Shōwa era they were interpreted as symbols of gentle luck, domestic harmony, and creative energy. Their appearance in still-life compositions on shikishi is uncommon, which gives this work a distinct place within early-20th-century folk-inspired motifs.
Style note
Studio style of the Taishō–early Shōwa period, combining ink, light color, and fine linear accents.
Condition
