Vintage Japanese shikishi with ink painting and light pigment, created in the Taishō–early Shōwa period. The work depicts a traditional night scene of cormorant fishing: a hanging lantern on a pole and two birds moving across the water. The composition is executed in a free suibokuga manner, with soft washes and the restrained, minimal expression characteristic of early Shōwa ink painting.
A quiet piece reflecting the poetic motif of ukai, widely appreciated in Japanese art of the early 20th century. The surface and materials correspond to a period shikishi with an original seal.
Style Note
Free ink painting in the suibokuga tradition of early Shōwa.
