Vintage Japanese shikishi set from the Taishō–early Shōwa period, consisting of two original works: a color sheet executed in ink and watercolor, and a graphite study of the same composition. Both pieces are created on solid shikishi panels and depict the traditional urban motif of sarumawashi — a street performer with a trained monkey.
The graphite sheet represents the early stage of developing the scene, while the color version shows the final arrangement of the motif. The stylistic character clearly follows the Taishō aesthetic: a soft, slightly European-influenced line, gentle proportions, and an illustrative, observant manner typical of Japanese urban art in the early 20th century. The preservation of both stages together offers a clear view of the artistic process from initial sketch to completed image.
Style note
Taishō-style illustrative ink and graphite manner.
