This striking Japanese shikishi features a bold calligraphic rendering of the kanji 引 (hiku – to pull, attract, or retreat), expressing a profound Zen concept of movement and introspection. The character is enclosed in a golden circle, symbolizing the ensō of completeness.
The reverse bears two red seals, reading Seiran (“clear mist”) and Bankaku (“ten thousand valleys”) – likely poetic art-names (gō) of a 20th-century calligrapher inspired by Rinzai Zen. This work is from the early–mid Shōwa era (ca. 1930s–50s), and shows a powerful, single-brush style rooted in wabi-sabi aesthetics.
Mounted on traditional shikishi board with decorative gold-flecked paper. A poetic and meditative addition to any collection.
