This Japanese hanging scroll (kakemono, kakejiku) presents the Zen calligraphy “Ichiwan-cha” (一碗茶 — “One Bowl of Tea”), accompanied by a softly brushed image of a tea bowl.
The phrase is deeply connected to the philosophy of the Way of Tea (Chadō / Sadō), expressing the idea that the entire universe may be found within a single bowl of tea.

Rooted in the Zen principle Ichi-go Ichi-e — “one time, one meeting” — it reminds us that each shared moment is unique and complete.
The scroll embodies the harmony (wa), respect (kei), purity (sei), and tranquility (jaku) that define the spirit of the tea ceremony.

Signed Sūhō sho (宗峰書) with two seals (Sūhō-in and Yosei-koji), probably by a Zen calligrapher in the Rinzai tradition during the Shōwa period (c. 1950–1980).
Ink on handmade washi, preserved in its original condition with natural patina and gentle signs of age.

Style note:
Free Zen brushwork (bokuseki), blending meditation, gesture, and the philosophy of tea.
