Vintage Shōwa Japanese ink and color painting on shikishi – Evening primrose

Vintage Japanese shikishi from the Shōwa era, depicting the evening primrose (tsukimisō). Executed in ink and light color on a traditional shikishi board with a thin decorative border. The composition reflects an August seasonal motif, confirmed by the handwritten note on the reverse. An artist’s seal is present. The work is dated to late Shōwa – early Heisei.

The plant’s poetic name, tsukimisō (“moon-viewing grass”), is associated with Japanese seasonal aesthetics and appears frequently in botanical themes of the period.
