Zen Ink Scroll “Daruma – The Awakened Gaze”, Japanese hanging scroll, Taishō–early Shōwa period art on silk

Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku) depicting Daruma (Bodhidharma), the legendary founder of Zen Buddhism.
Painted in expressive black ink (sumi-e) on silk, the portrait captures Daruma’s intense, awakened gaze and the quiet power of meditation.
The red seal, morphologically interpreted as “Shōhōsai in” (小峰齋印), likely represents the artist’s art-name (gō) used by a Zen painter active in the late Meiji to early Shōwa period (ca. 1900–1935).
Executed in the suiboku-ga tradition with spontaneous brushwork and dynamic contrasts, reflecting the spiritual simplicity of Zen.
Mounted on gold-patterned brocade (kinran) with white floral inner borders and dark wooden roller ends.
Good condition for its age, with natural folds and mild toning of silk.
A fine example of early 20th-century Japanese Zen painting.
