Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku) depicting Daruma (Bodhidharma), the legendary founder of Zen Buddhism.
Painted in expressive black ink (sumi-e) on silk, the portrait captures Daruma’s intense, awakened gaze and the quiet power of meditation.
The red seal, morphologically interpreted as “Shōhōsai in”, likely represents the artist’s art-name (gō) used by a Zen painter active in the late Meiji to early Shōwa period (ca. 1900–1935).
Executed in the suiboku-ga tradition with spontaneous brushwork and dynamic contrasts, reflecting the spiritual simplicity of Zen.
Mounted on gold-patterned brocade (kinran) with white floral inner borders and dark wooden roller ends.
Good condition for its age, with natural folds and mild toning of silk.
A fine example of early 20th-century Japanese Zen painting.
Size appr. 54 x 173 cm
