This refined calligraphy panel is a rare example of Meiji-to-Taishō literati style. The inscription evokes poetic imagery from Chinese classical culture:
“Exotic blossoms stir in the wind,
The spirit of Lanling shows its strength.”
The artist signs himself as Jo Chishū (徐千秋) and adds the phrase “Sesshū rōjin no shaku” — “the brush of the old man Sesshū” — as a reverent nod to the legacy of Sesshū Tōyō (1420–1506), one of Japan’s most esteemed ink painters. Rather than a claim of authorship, this reference suggests admiration for Sesshū’s artistic spirit and alignment with the classical ideals he embodied.
The brushwork demonstrates balance between elegance and vigor, reminiscent of Tang and Song calligraphic aesthetics.
