Japanese theatre woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada (Utagawa Toyokuni III) of the Utagawa school. The composition presents a rare winter night setting: falling snow, pine branches and an exterior fence create a dramatic stage atmosphere. Three actors appear in the scene — a figure climbing a tree, a central onnagata role in layered robes, and a character on the right engaged in an expressive gesture with a stage prop.
Exterior snow scenes with multiple figures occur far less frequently in Kunisada’s work than his well-known single-actor portraits, which makes this sheet an uncommon example within late Edo kabuki prints.
The artist signature Toyokuni ga and the Utagawa toshidama seal are present, together with publisher marks.
Date: late Edo, approximately 1845–1855.
