Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada (Utagawa Toyokuni III) of the Utagawa school. The composition depicts a samurai reading an open scroll and a standing onnagata (female-role actor) set inside a carefully constructed interior with sliding partitions, a tokonoma alcove and decorative elements.
Scenes combining two figures with a fully developed interior are noticeably less common in Kunisada’s work than his well-known single-actor portraits, which makes this sheet a rarer example within late Edo theatre prints.
Artist signature and publisher marks are present.
Date: late Edo, second half of the 19th century.
Sheet size: approximately 25 × 37 cm, ōban format.
Condition: good antique condition with natural signs of age, gentle creases and characteristic surface changes; colours remain preserved.
