Original Japanese hanging scroll (kakemono) depicting two farmers leading an ox, painted in expressive ink on traditional washi paper.
The scene captures the warmth and realism of everyday life at the end of the Edo period, blending the free brush of the Kyoto Shijō school with the spontaneous humor typical of Kyōsai’s circle.
Signed and sealed “Kōkawa Bajun (甲川馬純)” with both personal and family seals.
The original storage tube bears matching inscriptions “Bajun shōga / Kōkawa zu honmen,” confirming authorship and authenticity.
The paper shows clear signs of age — horizontal cracks, fold marks, surface wear, and scattered stains. The scroll has not been restored or reinforced.
Despite these time marks, the image remains strong and expressive, preserving the full composition and spirit of the original.
A genuine Edo–Meiji transitional work, unaltered and honest in its presentation — a rare survivor of Japan’s 19th-century ink tradition.
Safe and tracked shipping from Latvia (Riga Gallery of Japanese Art CloudyYokomido).
Style note:
Late Edo–Early Meiji ink painting, in the Kyoto Shijō tradition with expressive Kyōsai-like brushwork.
