This authentic Edo Period hanging scroll (kakejiku) depicts a tranquil rural scene of farmers plowing a field with an ox. The confident brushwork and expressive lines reflect the influence of the Kano School combined with the poetic spirit of the Nanga (Bunjinga) literati tradition.
Signed by the artist Kokawa Bajun (甲川馬純) with his original double seals, this work is a fine example of mid-Edo genre painting (fūzoku-ga) capturing everyday life in early Japan. The original wooden roller end is inscribed with the title “Gyūkōzu” (Ox Plowing Scene).
Estimated date: mid- to late Edo period (c. 1700–1800). Dimensions: approx. 53 × 176 cm. Materials: ink and light color on paper, with original mounting.
Condition: Authentic antique piece with natural age-related patina and minor signs of wear consistent with age. A rare collector’s item for Japanese art lovers, perfect for wabi-sabi interiors or traditional art collections.
