Rare and symbolic antique Japanese netsuke, masterfully hand-carved from natural bone (or possible ivory).
This netsuke depicts a rat perched atop a human skull — an iconic vanitas motif in Japanese art, representing the transient nature of life and the cycle of decay and renewal.
Beautifully aged with a rich natural patina, this piece retains crisp details: the expressive rat with carefully incised fur and the anatomically stylized skull with visible teeth and cranial structure. Original himotoshi (cord holes) show it was used traditionally with kimono sagemono (inro, tobacco pouch).
Material: Bone (possible ivory)
Period: Late Edo to early Meiji era (19th century)
Condition: Excellent antique condition with some wear and age-related patina; no structural damage.
Dimensions: Approx. 4–5 cm (1.5–2 inches)
A true collector’s item and conversation piece — for lovers of Japanese netsuke, memento mori art, and symbolic miniature carvings.
