Antique Japanese netsuke in carved bone, depicting a mouse seated on a human skull. A traditional motif associated with reflections on impermanence, characteristic of late Edo – early Meiji period work (mid-19th century).
The carving is compact and balanced, with natural modelling of the mouse and a fully worked skull underside showing the eye sockets, nasal cavity and dental structure. The material is identified as bone based on surface morphology and wear. The himotoshi openings show genuine signs of use. The surface carries an even natural patina formed over time.
Condition: good antique condition, with natural age traces and preserved surface. No restoration.
Size: miniature netsuke format.
Style note
Traditional bone netsuke carving with restrained modelling and a philosophical motif.
