Antique Japanese Shinto Temple Scroll (1700–1850)

This rare all-paper kakejiku is an authentic temple talisman (gofu) featuring traditional calligraphy honoring three great Shinto deities:

八幡大明神 (Hachiman Daimyōjin) – guardian of warriors and protector of the home

天照皇大神宮 (Amaterasu Kōtaijingū) – the sun goddess and divine ancestor of the imperial line

春日大明神 (Kasuga Daimyōjin) – patron of the Fujiwara clan and household prosperity

Below the large characters is a unique moral teaching reminding the reader to live righteously and in harmony with the spirits. The calligraphy style is a formal kaisho script with subtle gyosho brushwork, typical of shrine scribes in the late Edo period.

The scroll is made entirely of hand-crafted washi paper with a decorative printed paper border — a style often used in local shrines for protective charms. Natural darkening, patina, and small age-related tears add authentic wabi-sabi character.

Size: approx. 36 × 153 cm (14 × 60 inches) — perfect for displaying in a traditional alcove or as a unique spiritual wall art piece in a modern interior.
This is more than just decor — it’s a piece of Japanese cultural heritage, symbolizing a timeless connection between everyday life and divine protection. Ideal for collectors of Japanese antiques, Buddhist or Shinto relics, zen interiors, or anyone who appreciates the beauty of historical calligraphy.
Condition: Visible signs of age, edge wear, and natural paper aging consistent with its age.
Estimated age: late 17th to mid-19th century (c. 1700–1850)
Origin: Provincial Japanese shrine; unsigned, as typical for temple-made protective scrolls.
