Japanese hanging scroll (kakemono / kakejiku) depicting a mother bathing her child in a wooden tub, with a maid holding a lantern by the door.
Painted on fine silk in soft pigments, this work revives a classical composition by Katsukawa Shunchō (active c.1780–1795), one of the early masters of ukiyo-e beauty and daily life scenes.
The motif, “Fujin furoba no zu” (“Women’s Bath Scene”), represents purity, warmth, and maternal affection — a symbol of domestic harmony in Edo–Meiji aesthetics.
Executed with refined lines and delicate coloring, typical of late Meiji bijin-ga revival works.
Mounted on patterned blue and beige silk with original wooden rollers and handwritten title on the outer roll.
Safe and tracked shipping from Latvia (Riga Gallery of Japanese Art CloudyYokomido).
Style note:
Classical bijin-ga composition on silk, echoing the Katsukawa school elegance with Meiji-period refinement.
