This impressive Japanese hanging scroll (kakemono) depicts a tiger among bamboo, a classical East Asian motif symbolizing strength tempered with resilience. The tiger embodies courage and power, while bamboo conveys endurance and flexibility — together forming a timeless metaphor of balance in life.
The scroll is signed Kanō Baisai (狩野梅斎筆). Kanō Baisai (1883–1969) was a painter of the Nagoya school of nihonga, trained under Ishikawa Yūrin and later Ikegami Shūho. He exhibited at the Imperial Art Exhibitions (Teiten) and is considered an important figure in the 20th-century continuation of the Kanō tradition. His works combine bold ink brushwork with refined texture, bridging the heritage of the classical Kanō school with modern nihonga aesthetics.
