Rare piece of Japanese artistry: a unique shikishi panel from the late Edo to early Meiji period (c.1850–1900). This work beautifully combines an ukiyo-e scene of a lady under an umbrella with delicate hand-painted calligraphy on silk — a highly unusual technique for collectors.
The poetic inscription is in the spirit of kyōka verse, reminiscent of the Katsushika school (founded by the great Hokusai) and the refined bijinga portraits of the Utamaro school. Such hybrid shikishi panels were treasured gifts for the cultural elite of the time, blending painting, poetry, and the wabi-sabi aesthetic.
