A striking vintage Japanese shikishi featuring vivid red bamboo, painted in an expressive sumi‑e style. The work is signed Togaku Jushō (戸岳 寿祥) – an art‑name combining the characters for “mountain” and “auspicious longevity.” The calligraphy to the right includes the phrase 寿祥 (Jushō), conveying wishes for long life and happiness.
This piece reflects the kachō‑ga tradition (paintings of birds and flowers, or in this case, bamboo – a symbol of resilience and integrity) and likely dates from the Taishō to early Shōwa period (circa 1910s–1930s). Painted with bold red pigment instead of the usual black sumi ink, it represents the experimental side of early 20th‑century Japanese art.
The shikishi is made of quality fibrous cardboard with a soft natural tone, measuring approx. 24×27 cm (9.5″×10.5″). It carries two red seals beneath the signature, confirming the artist’s name and adding a touch of traditional authenticity.
An excellent piece for collectors of Japanese sumi‑e, bamboo art, or Taishō–Shōwa era works – or anyone who loves the elegance of Japanese minimalism.
